Netherlands donates US$ 22 million for water and sanitation services in South Sudan

The UN children’s agency, UNICEF said it received US$ 22 million from the Kingdom of the Netherlands to provide access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene services in South Sudan.

The UN children’s agency, UNICEF said it received US$ 22 million from the Kingdom of the Netherlands to provide access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene services in South Sudan.

The agreement was signed at the Dutch Embassy in Juba by Her Excellency Ambassador Janet Alberda and Dr. Mohamed Ayoya, the UNICEF Representative in South Sudan. 

Ambassador Janet Alberda during the signing ceremony said, “We all know water is life and sanitation is health- together, they are some of the most important requirements for building the resilience of conflict-affected people especially among women and children.”

While for his part, Ayoya stressed the importance of clean water.

“Access to clean water is an effective strategy to fight diseases and therefore a strategy for the future. A healthy population is better positioned to take a peaceful South Sudan forward,” he said.

According to UNICEF, the Netherlands-UNICEF WASH partnership in South Sudan focuses on creating resilience in Rumbek, Yambio, Torit and Bor with the funding expected to provide 250,000 people with sustainable access to safe drinking water, 175,000 people with access to adequate sanitation facilities, and 175,000 people with hygiene promotion.
