Negotiators traveling to S Sudan peace talks

The South Sudanese government delegation has traveled to Bahar Dar, Ethiopia to participate in a fresh round of peace talks under IGAD auspices. Members of the SPLM-IO delegation remain at the moment in Addis Ababa but are preparing to travel.

Bahar Dar is the capital of the Amhara region of Ethioipa and the new venue for this round of talks. Previous rounds were held in Addis Ababa.

It appears other stakeholders may also have traveled already to Bahar Dar. The status of the Political Parties Delegation however is not yet confirmed, after South Sudanese security agents blocked the delegation’s leader Lam Akol from traveling from Juba to Addis Ababa on Saturday.

This round of talks will focus on the formation of a transitional government of national unity.

The IGAD mediation last month laid out the framework for a potential peace agreement in which SPLM-IO would take the newly created position of prime minister and SPLM-Juba would remain with the presidency.

Although SPLM-Juba accepted this arrangement in principle, the other stakeholders are yet to agree on the proposal.
