Nearly 700 returnees have voluntarily returned to South Sudan’s Ayaci County of Torit State from neighboring Uganda since last month, an official said.
Ayaci county commissioner Charles Okumu told Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday that they expect more returnees in the coming days as security situation stabilizes.
“We have received in Pogee about 180 within the month of August and the beginning of September. In Pajok we have a greater number from the three payams, we have about 500 and something who have just arrived. The number is increasing,” he said.
Okumu said non-governmental organizations are supporting the returnees with basic needs including food, shelter, and washing soap.
“I always preach to them and I wrote a letter to their leaders that please you come back because security wise the situation is now good and the government is ready to help,” he appealed to those who are still in refugee camps.
Commissioner Okumu assured them that the security situation has improved saying they should return home to rebuild their lives.
