Wounded soldiers have flooded hospitals in several towns of South Sudan since the outbreak of the conflict two weeks ago, with the number at Juba Military Hospital alone currently 987.
Vice President James Wani Igga said yesterday that 987 SPLA soldiers are being treated at Juba Military Hospital. He was speaking at a press conference before visiting the hospital.
Another 50 wounded soldiers from Unity State are reported to be under treatment at hospitals in Warrap State, according to the Health Ministry there. At least 70 war-wounded, including civilians, arrived at the Malakal State Hospital in Upper Nile, according to the medical aid group MSF.
MSF also reported that their medical teams in Lankien and Yuai, northern Jonglei State, have seen gunshot victims who have walked for three days from Bor in search of safe access to healthcare. MSF staff treated 64 gunshot victims in Lankien and Yuai.
There is no report yet of the number of wounded at the hospitals in Bentiu.
At the main civil hospital in Juba, the number of admitted gunshot victims during the first week of the conflict was 445, according to the World Health Organization, among them many civilians.
