There are nearly 1.9 million internally displaced persons living in South Sudan according to the International Organization for Migration, a record high as fighting continues across the country.

There are also more than 212,000 civilians living in U.N. protection of civilian sites across South Sudan, more than 108,00 living in the Bentiu site alone according to IOM

“Worsening trends of insecurity are preventing IDPs from returning to their homes in many parts of the country,” said IOM South Sudan Chief of Mission William Barriga. “While civilians are grappling with deteriorating humanitarian conditions, access constraints are making it more difficult for IOM and relief agencies to deliver aid to the most vulnerable, particularly in recent weeks,”

The record number comes as South Sudan’s humanitarian situation continues to worsen. The value of the SSP has plunged to new lows reaching 105 SSP per 1 USD on Friday, and the country’s inflation rate topped 800 percent. Nearly 40 percent of the country faces food insecurity, according to the World Food Program.
