NDM’s Political Affairs Secretary passes away in Aweil

The Assistant Secretary of Political Affairs for the National Democratic Movement (NDM) in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, South Sudan, tragically succumbed to a heart attack in Aweil town on Monday afternoon. Family members and senior party officials have confirmed this unfortunate event.

Mayen Kon Akot, the Chairperson for the NDM in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, shared the news with Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, expressing sorrow over the loss and acknowledging the valuable experiences the late politician had gained.

“Atong Leek Lual, our colleague, held the position of Deputy Chairperson for the Conflict Resolution Commission and served as the Assistant Secretary for Political Affairs of the NDM under the leadership of Dr. Lam Akol in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State. She was also one of the founding members of the opposition movement,” Kon explained.

He further recounted the circumstances surrounding her sudden demise, stating, “Her family informed us that, according to medical reports, she suffered a heart attack while ironing her clothes. After attempting to rest on her bed, she began experiencing severe chest pains. Despite being rushed to the hospital, doctors declared her dead.”

The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State has extended their heartfelt condolences to the grieving family of the late political figure. Daniel Akot, the Secretary-General of SPLM-IO in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, described the deceased as a kind and dedicated personality in the political landscape.

In a statement, Akot shared, “I personally knew her, and she has never been sick. She was a highly committed and educated member of the opposition party. Her absence will be felt not only by her family but by the entire state government of Northern Bahr el Ghazal, particularly SPLM-IO. She supported us during the inauguration of our state Secretariat in 2022.”

The late individual, a married graduate from the University of Bahr el Ghazal, held an administrative role at the same university before her appointment in the Northern Bahr el Ghazal State Government in 2021.

She actively supported the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army in the 1990s and played a pivotal role as one of the founders of the National Democratic Movement in 2016.
