The National Democratic Movement (NDM) led by Dr Lam Akol has voiced concerns about the missed deadlines in the implementation of the peace accord and urged the parties to finalize the formation of all transitional government institutions.
Since the formation of the presidency in February, there have been delays in the establishment of a national legislative assembly and the continued absence of state and county administrations.
The revitalised peace agreement included an implementation matrix for the formation of transitional government institutions and major reforms to be implemented before to hold general elections after 30 months.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, the secretary-general of the opposition National Democratic Movement (NDM), Mahjoub Biel Turuk said their party’s evaluation showed there are delays in the implementation of transitional government activities.
Turuk further said several activities that were to be implemented during the first six months of the transitional period have been missed by the parties.
He cited delays in the implementation of the security arrangements and formation of government institutions as some of the key findings of their evaluation, urging the parties to the peace agreement to expedite the implementation process.
Turuk appealed to all the parties to exert their efforts to implement the provisions of the peace agreement based on the implementation matrix until general elections.
"All parties must engage in the implementation of security arrangements, state governments and the national parliament to complete the institutions of the peace agreement," he said.
According to the NDM secretary-general, the recent evaluation also revealed that the lack of funding, disputes between the parties and the coronavirus pandemic were some of the major challenges delaying the implementation of the revitalised peace agreement.
NDM is part of the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA), but until now it has not been represented in the current government positions as part of the power-sharing deal.
