The Chairperson of the South Sudan National Constitutional Review Commission (NCRC), Dr Riang Yer Zuor, has announced December 4 as the launch date for civic education campaigns.
Zuor made the announcement during the ongoing four-day workshop on fiscal federalism, organized by NCRC.
“The commission, in collaboration with partners, is planning to launch the civic education program and consultative campaigns before the end of this year,” the NCRC Chair said.
“Our plan is for the event to take place on December 4, 2024, but we will update you on that,” he stated.
Zuor said the event would pave the way for more civic education campaigns that will take place nationwide next year.
“This will be a one-day event that we will use to inform the people of South Sudan on what to expect come the New Year. We want to dedicate the beginning of next year to the activities of a nationwide civic education public consultation campaign,” he said.
“The launch before the end of the New Year will give our people the freedom of momentum and something to hope for, moving forward to the New Year,” he said.
Zuor hailed the partners for providing the resources for the commission’s tasks.
“We are all aware of financial difficulties that we have faced as a commission in particular and the country in general, but that has not stopped us from being active. We thank the partners for their support,” he concluded.
NCRC on Tuesday started a four-day workshop on Fiscal Federalism to prepare the members for civic education and public consultations.
South Sudan is in the process to draft its permanent constitution before upcoming elections.
In September, South Sudan’s transitional government postponed the December 2024 general elections until December 2026, citing a lack of preparedness.
This is the second time the country, which gained independence in 2011, is postponing elections and extending a transitional period that started in February 2020.
