The neighboring Dinka Malual and Misseriya communities have resolved to respect a peace accord between them that details the monitoring of crimes, conflict mitigation, and payment of blood compensation for murders.
The resolutions were reached during a five-day peace conference which concluded in Aweil Town of South Sudan's Northern Bahr el Ghazal State where more than 70 people participated including the Ngok Dinka as observers.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Friday, participants from both sides expressed their commitment to promote peace despite the arising cases of murder and cattle raids.
In the conference, Dinka Malual claimed blood compensation for four missing girls while the Misseriya sought compensation for six people including a trader killed last week.
Dinka Malual Paramount Chief, Peter Makuac Makuac, said the conference ended successfully as he recounted historical ties with their neighbors.
“The conference was going very well indeed with our brother Misseriya. We are brothers since the time of our fathers and now also. If there is a problem among us, we sit and solve it smoothly without any problem. We have been here for five days and we have addressed small issues among us. We have agreed to pay blood compensation for people killed from both sides," said Makuac.
The Misseriya representative at the conference, Ibrahim Marek Satur, reiterated that the conference was fruitful but called on both communities to exercise patience and rule of law for criminal cases.
“We thank God we reached fruitful results in the conference. We arrived here on 31st January and the conference started on 1st February and we shared ideas between Dinka Malual and Misseriya on renewal of peace relations,’’ he said.
The Northern Bahr el Ghazal State peace and reconciliation commission said the conference was to restore relations between the communities. According to the commission, pre-migration, and post-migration conferences are held every year to enhance peaceful coexistence.
