NBG peace conference says nomads can graze in S Sudan

A peace conference in South Sudan’s Northern Bahr al Ghazal state between Dinka and Arab tribes reached agreements on security and grazing rights.

A peace conference in South Sudan’s Northern Bahr al Ghazal state between Dinka and Arab tribes reached agreements on security and grazing rights.

The conference, held from Monday to Wednesday at the South Sudan Grand Hotel, discussed peace between Dinka Malual, Misseriya, Fallata, and Reziegat tribes.

The representatives, who included county commissioners, peace commissioners, chiefs, women, and youth representatives, resolved to allow nomadic pastoralists to enter the state to find water and pasture.

The conference members agreed that the three tribes should maintain security along borders and that nomads entering South Sudan must respect the culture of the Dinka Malual.

The groups also decided to establish shared markets.

Acting Governor of Northern Bahr al Ghazal state Salva Chol Ayat said: “It is to the benefit of our children, and as government we work hard so that peace will reach other states who have conflict.”

“Even though we separated from Sudan we still have relationships,” he continued. “There are goods now coming from Uganda, but there is a market here in which goods that come from Sudan can be bought and sold,” he said, quoted in the Juba Monitor.

Aweil North County Commissioner Kon Angok Kon said: “When there is love and peace there will not be any problem to happen among people.”
