The union of disabled persons in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State is demanding full representation for persons with disabilities at the state legislature and other government institutions.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Monday, Moses Kiir Yuk, the union’s chairman said the physically challenged face numerous challenges that need to be addressed.
“We as disabled, we do not have anyone representing our voices and issues. There is no one at the parliament. I have seen even in the society, if they bring a disabled, they bring the war wounded, and they do not recognize for example those who are disabled by polio. The disabled are the only ones who will understand the problems of fellow disables,” he said.
For his part, Deng Ayom Ayom, Aweil State parliament speaker said those with disabilities should wait for an election and request their various political parties to assimilate them.
“They should raise their concerned to the concerned authorities like the SPLA and other political parties. These people have their own parties and they could be considered in their parties. If not they can join any civil society who can raise their concerns,” he said.
The South Sudan Transitional Constitution states, "all levels of government shall guarantee to persons with special needs participation in society and the enjoyment of rights and freedoms set out in this constitution, especially access to public utilities, suitable education and employment."
However, there is no specific legislation relating to the rights and representation of persons with disabilities.
