38-year-old Odingila Odong, an officer of South Sudan's National Security Service, shot himself to death with his personal weapon on Thursday.
The incident happened at his home in the town of Torit in Eastern Equatoria State, according to police authorities.
Major Justin Kleopus Takuru, the state police spokesperson, told Radio Tamazuj on Friday that the case is being investigated.
“He [Odong] committed suicide at Hai Sejer Salaam after shooting himself dead at his home. When the forces and the CID [Criminal Investigation Department] went to the scene, they found a letter with no reason for his death,” said Takuru.
He added, “Of course as police, investigations and follow-ups are ongoing because someone earlier came and opened a case that he demands dowry from Odong. In our investigation, we are not interested in knowing the cause of his death, but our investigations are going according to follow-ups on what happened”.
The police officer further said the deceased had absconded duty after several attempts by his in-laws to attack him over unpaid dowry. He urged citizens to follow legal ways of settling marriage disputes.
