National security officer arrested for injuring boy in Bor

A national security officer was on Thursday arrested in South Sudan’s Jonglei State capital, Bor after he shot and injured a boy during the national army day celebrations.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj Friday, the state information minister, Atong Kuol Manyang, said the officer, arrested on spot, is in police custody.

He said the injured boy is nursing his injuries at Bor Hospital.

The cause of the incident remains unclear, but police have launched investigations into the matter, according to the state minister.

Atong urged the boy’s relatives to be patient and allow authorities to handle the matter.

Celebrations were held on Thursday in Bor town to commemorate the formation of the former rebel movement in Sudan - now the South Sudanese army- on 16 May 1983.
