A 23-year-old man who was riding a motorcycle was knocked dead and his pillion passenger was injured by a National Security Service (NSS) vehicle over the weekend in Rubkona County, Unity State, the traffic police said.
The deceased was identified as John Bol.
The Unity State traffic police director, Domai Dak Kai, told Radio Tamazuj Monday that the accident which happened on Saturday night was caused by speeding.
“There was a National Security vehicle moving at high speed from the Unity Oilfield to Rioriak Payam and it hit a motorcycle and killed the rider on the spot and the passenger was injured,” he said. “The accident occurred on Saturday at 10 pm because there was a lot of dust so the vehicle collided with the motorbike.”
“The motorcycle passenger who was injured is now receiving treatment at Bentiu Hospital,” Dak added.
The traffic police officer said the National Security driver and his vehicle have been detained by the police pending investigations.
“After the incident, the first thing we did was to arrest the suspect and he is being detained at Bentiu Police Station until investigations are completed,” he said.
Dak urged the family of the deceased rider to remain calm as investigations continue and cautioned drivers against speeding. He also warned that motorcycles are only allowed to carry one passenger.
