The newly created ministry of federal affairs in South Sudan has for the first time since it was established received a set of furniture from the United Nations Development Programme
The institution was established under the terms of the August 2015 agreement to oversee governance matters, particularly what kind governance structures the country should adopt. South Sudan is current a presidential system under decentralized system. Many have, however, indicated a desire for federal system but have not reached a consensus of what type of federal system that should be adopted.
In a bid to promote institutional relations, a unit responsible for democracy and governance and stabilization of the United Nations development programme provided furniture to the new ministry.
The purpose of the donation, according to the statement at the handing function is to support the establishment of conditions for peace and development in South Sudan. Speaking at the same function, the minister of federal affairs, Richard K.Mulla, acknowledged the receipt, saying it was the time the institution received a support from the one of the partners.
“We had nothing when the ministry was created, absolutely nothing, no cars, not even a place. The Local Government Board provided us with a place and now UNDP is supporting us with furniture. We are thankful that UNDP is taking the initiative to help this ministry”, said Richard K Mula, Minister of Federal Affairs. The Ministry was formed under a resolution of the peace agreement and was stablished with the aim of strengthening national and sub-national intergovernmental linkages and relations in the country, but the lack of public resources has been a major challenge. UNDP is supporting the MoFedA providing office furniture and equipment to facilitate the developing of its mandate.
“What we are giving today shouldn’t be seen as furniture but as a way to support peace and development in South Sudan. This is the beginning of a stronger partnership with which we are sowing the seeds of the future of this country”, expressed UNDP Country Director, Kamil Kamaluddeen.
UNDP will also support this ministry facilitating a consultative workshop for the establishment of MoFedA, with the collaboration of GiZ, who coordinates the members of the Technical Committee
