National delegation in Pibor seeks to calm tensions

South Sudan’s president Salva Kiir has dispatched a national delegation to the proposed Boma State Thursday to ease tensions between SPLA generals allied to the appointed governor Baba Medan and the former Cobra Faction leader David Yau Yau.

Hundreds of civilians have recently fled fearing clashes between the two sides.

The delegation is led by the Ismail Konyi, a prominent chief from the area.

Yau Yau, whom Salva Kiir dismissed from his position as chief administrator of Pibor said in an interview with Radio Tamazuj on Thursday that the tensions came as a result of the rejection of the new governor by the people.

He condemned this tension, calling on the people of Pibor stop violence and accept peaceful dialogue. Yau Yau further urged the people to present their complaint to the committee sent by Kiir.

“My message to the people of Pibor is that if they have any problem with the new governor they should accept peaceful dialogue to resolve it without causing any violence or destruction,” Yau Yau said.
