The leader of the National Alliance and Third Deputy Speaker of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) Kornelio Kon Ngu on Friday blamed the postponement of the December General Election on the lack of requisite infrastructure.

Addressing a press conference in Juba, Ngu expressed optimism that the poll would be held in 2026, lauding the South Sudanese for “supporting the postponement.”

“All of us, as political parties and people of South Sudan, are hopeful that the elections will be held in time for the agreement. Therefore, I would like to express my gratitude to the political parties and say that we are still patient and are waiting for 2026 to hold the elections and to have a new government in 2027,” Ngu said

He urged South Sudanese to give the leaders a chance to achieve peace so that there would be no more fighting.

“We told them to give us a chance to continue and to stand side by side in all the states so that we can go through the process of development. We called for the postponement of the elections and we are working side by side with the people to hold the elections,” he added.

Ngu said the trust between the political parties and the citizens would give a chance for a credible vote in 2026.

Last month, South Sudan’s transitional government has decided to postpone a long-delayed national election until December 2026.

A group of Western countries have called the transitional government’s decision to postpone elections by two years a “disappointment”. The group of countries – including the UK, US, Norway, the EU, Canada, France, Germany, and the Netherlands – said the delay shows that the South Sudanese government failed to implement the peace deal signed in 2018.

The December 2024 vote was poised to shape the future of a country still grappling with the challenges of peace-building and governance.
