National Alliance accuses Kiir's SPLM faction of obstructing formation of new parliament

The South Sudan’s national alliance of opposition parties accused Kiir's SPLM faction of obstructing the formation of the transitional parliament and rejecting to endorse nominees of political parties to the parliament according to the peace agreement.

Chapter 1, article 11.1 of the peace agreement provides for the formation of transitional national legislative assembly comprising 400 members, including the prior 332 members and additional 50 members from SPLM-IO, 1 member from SPLM-FD, and 17 from other political parties.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, deputy chairperson of national alliance Kornelio Kon said political parties have submitted their nominees for the seats of the national parliament but the presidency rejected to endorse them and said some seats have to be given to other political parties affiliated to the government, which he said is a clear violation to the peace agreement.

“The issue of the seats of the political parties in the national parliament has not been resolved yet. JMEC has endorsed the list but the government has intervened which has complicated the issue and will let us move back to square one and to negotiate it from the beginning,” said Kon.

“This issue is now left to JMEC and we are waiting for their response. The government is rejecting to give other political parties the 17 seats in the parliament," he added.

Radio Tamazuj was unable to contact South Sudan presidency for a comment.
