Over 10,000 people in parts of Nasir County of South Sudan’s Upper Nile State remained without food and shelter weeks after floods destroyed their homes.
“People in all the low-lying areas of Wanga-Ading, Turou, Malou, and Nasir Central are affected by the floods from the overflow of the Sobat River and heavy rainfall. People are displaced without food. Many other people are stranded in floodwaters," Nasir County commissioner Duol Kuon Thien told Radio Tamazuj.
He called on the aid agencies operating in Upper Nile to come to the aid of the flood victims in the county.
A resident of Nasir town John Ochan said the floodwaters have destroyed livelihoods leaving families without food.
“These floods are too much affecting us in Nasir town. Livelihoods have been destroyed. Also, other areas like Jikmeer, Makeer, Mandeer are affected,” he said.
Meanwhile, Deng Chuol, the Naasir Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) coordinator also decried a dire humanitarian situation after weeks of floods and called for urgent humanitarian intervention.
Floods have devastated many communities in different parts of the country since July by destroying livelihoods and uprooting more than 400,000 people from their homes.
