Authorities in proposed Namurnyang state in South Sudan’s Eastern Equatoria state said various areas have been hit by hunger, forcing a larger number of families to migrate to neighbouring countries.
Sam Felix Makoja, Minister of Education, Gender, and Social Welfare, told Radio Tamazuj that Namurnyang citizens were suffering from hunger due to little rain last year.
He said security problems caused a large number of citizens to desert the area.
Sam stressed the state needs urgent food assistance. He pointed out they recently received 20 tractors donated by the presidency, but the tractors went unused since there wasn’t enough rain.
The government official noted the national government in Juba distributed about 1300 sacks of rice to the needy people in the state, but said the assistance was inadequate for the local population.
