The commissioner of Western Equatoria State’s Nagero County, Gabriel Ferdinando Nvolo, on Tuesday suspended the cashier at the County Education Department, Peter John Mungo, for three months over lack of accountability.
In a letter dated 3 September which was seen by Radio Tamazuj, the commissioner wrote that the suspension came after the accountant failed to account for last October’s salary of primary and Secondary school teachers which amounts to 18 million South Sudanese Pounds (SSP).
“This order is issued as county order No. 5 of the Transitional Constitution of Western Equatoria State 2011 as amended in 2015 as a 3-month suspension order with half pay to Mr. Peter John Mungo, the county education cashier, with immediate effect from the date of signature of this order,” the order reads in part. “He (Mungo) filed to submit accountability for the SSP 18,000,000 cash received in Nagero County Education Department as salaries for primary and secondary school teachers for October 2023.”
According to Commissioner Nvolo, some classified and unclassified staff in the education department have also not been paid their October 2023 wages despite the office receiving the money.
Efforts to reach the suspended officer were futile.
Civil servants across South Sudan have not been paid salaries for close to a year now.
