The government of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State has announced that the official inauguration of the state parliament and swearing-in of the legislators will take place on Monday next week.
William Anyuon Kuol, the state’s information minister and government spokesman told Radio Tamazuj Thursday the two functions will happen on the same day.
“The swearing-in of the members of parliament and official opening of the assembly will be done on the same day, which is Monday next week,” Minister Anyuon revealed. “I have already talked to the local media houses and we invited all media houses and the general public to attend the event because it will be a colorful day.”
The assembly was expected to begin operations this week but some members of parliament who spoke on condition of anonymity said Governor Tong Akeen Ngor adjourned the event ceremony due to unpreparedness.
“We met with the governor and he told us that the event was postponed because some arrangements were not in place but he promised that it will happen next week,” a nominated parliamentarian said.
For his part, Aguer Kawac Akok, the executive director of Christian Restore Hope (CRH), a civil society organization in the state, called for the immediate opening of the state legislative assembly so that outstanding issues such as security can be addressed.
“The opening of the state legislative assembly will help the communities because there are issues which need the assembly attention like security, gender-based violence, and other cases,” Kawac said
