N. Bahr el Ghazal polio vaccination campaign targets 293,000 children

A health official in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State on Wednesday said they carrying out a polio vaccination exercise that is targeting 293,108 children under five years of age, including foreigners and returnees. 

William Deng Lual, the Director General at the State Ministry of Health, told Radio Tamazuj that the campaign is ongoing in Aweil West, Aweil North, Aweil East counties, and Aweil Municipal Council after having been completed in Aweil South and Aweil Center counties.

“The polio vaccination is targeting 293, 108 children from 0 to 5 years old. A similar activity was concluded in Aweil South and Aweil Center counties because the campaign started over there last week,” he explained. “So, the exercise is now being conducted in Aweil Town, Aweil East, Aweil North and Aweil West counties.”

Malek Kon, a resident of Aweil Town, said he witnessed the deployment of the vaccinators early on Wednesday morning.

“I saw them [vaccination teams] in the morning on their way to Aweil but now I do not see anyone of them,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Adim Bak Adim, the new administrator of Ariath Payam in Aweil North County, said the vaccination teams have been working for the last couple of days in his jurisdiction.

“The polio vaccination teams have been carrying out their activities of treating the children for the last two days,” he said.
