Police authorities in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State on Friday released a security plan for the imminent Christmas and New Year’s Day festivities which they said became operational on 29 November.
Captain Guot Guot Akol, the state police spokesman, said that the security forces are prepared to maintain law and order and combat all forms of crime during the festive season.
“I want to announce that the police are ready to maintain security during Christmas and New Year’s celebrations,” Capt. Guot said. “The police already started their patrols on 29 November to crack down on criminals and we achieved much by arresting those who destabilize security in the state.”
He added: “We have divided the state into 15 zones, and in every zone, we deployed six armed personnel plus six pickup vehicles that facilitate movement.”
For his part, the Aweil Center County police inspector, Brigadier General George Awath Wol, said his department has formed several security committees which will handle security matters during the festivities.
“We, the police in Aweil Center County are committed to controlling crimes before they take place and we formed committees and tasked them to resolve all conflicts in the local communities,” Gen. Awath said.
A resident of Aweil town, Tong Zola, said he was happy that there has been improved police presence in the town as witnessed by day and night parols.
“They (police) are even now patrolling day and night in many locations and my comment is that this is good and all we want is to be in peace,” Tong said.
