At least five women were detained by police last week in connection with the killing of another woman in Aweil East County of Northern Bahr-el-Ghazal State, police have said.
Capt. Guot Guot Akol, the state police spokesman, told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday that the five women are accused of killing Abuk Majok Nngong in the village of Malual Deng Ngor in Yargot Payam of Aweil East County when a fracas broke out at a water point on Friday last week.
“I want to confirm that on Friday last week an incident happened in a village called Malual Deng of Yargot Payam of Aweil East County. Disputes erupted among children and women at a borehole and they fought until a woman identified as Abuk Majok Ngong was killed. The body was admitted at Aweil Civil Hospital for postmortem before it was transferred back for burial and the five suspected women in the murder are currently facing investigations,’’ Capt. Guot said.
Thiep Bol Adim, the area chief also confirmed the incident and said that water-related conflicts are on the rise in the area because of insufficient water sources to meet the demand of the big numbers of the local communities.
“The incident occurred in the area of Malual Deng Ngor’s Karic village, the women fought with sticks at a borehole until one woman was struck dead in the fight. Thanks, Radio Tamazuj for covering the challenges facing us here. Lack of enough water stations is the main problem fueling conflict among the local communities,’’ Chief Thiep said.
