Police authorities in South Sudan’s Northern Bahr el Ghazal State have apprehended two suspects who have been linked to a string of robberies around Aweil town.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Monday, the state police spokesperson, Captain Guot Guot Akol said the duo was detained after a small arms control unit within the Criminal Investigations Department raided the criminals’ hideouts.
“We have arrested two people possessing two guns (AK47). This came days after we received some reports from citizens in Mathiang, Gateway, and Maper residential areas that some criminals use to loot their properties at gunpoint,” he said.
Guot acknowledged that burglaries and robberies had increased in recent days around the town as citizens decried the deteriorating insecurity.
Akook Diang, a citizen in Maper Akot residential area said, “One pastor in Maper Akot was attacked by unidentified people possessing guns and the criminals took his money and mobile phone.”
Another resident in Aweil suburb, Akuei Deng applauded the security organs for apprehending the suspected criminals and said, “Of Course, if the government is detaining people who rob the common citizen, that is a good initiative because it is criminal and a shame on us. We recommend for the law to take its course.”
