N Bahr el Ghazal development adviser returns home after months in jail

Yel Deng Nguel, a development adviser in Northern Bahr el Ghazal has returned to the state after spending several months in jail in the national capital Juba.

Charges against Yel were dropped three weeks ago but he remained in Juba where he was held at a detention facility run by the military intelligence to wait for clearance from the military leadership allegedly after General Paul Malong Awan decided Yel should either remain in Juba or leave the country, but should not be allowed to return to Northern Bahr el Ghazal

Yel insisted on returning home, saying his family had asked for his return.

“I have returned. It has more than three days since I came. People were very happy as more than 400 SPLM members came out to receive me on arrival. They were very happy and I was also happy to be back and reunite with our people and comrades,” Yel said in an interview on Tuesday.

He claimed his reception has irked his political opponents, some of whom have accused him of splitting the party and have therefore threatened to file against him a lawsuit before the court in Aweil.

“Santino Deng Wol called me yesterday to say that I have been accused of dividing the party,” said Yel in reference to the SPLA-Juba’s 3rd Division commander covering Warrap and Northern Bahr el Ghazal states. “They are threatening to file a lawsuit against me. They are not happy with the reception accorded to me upon arrival by comrades and our people. I don’t know how I have divided the party,” he said.
