Members of the Northern Bahr el Ghazal state assembly voted Tuesday to remove their colleague Joseph Rol Gau who had been appointed by the ousted former caretaker governor Kuel Aguer Kuel.
Information committee chair Achack Thiep Thiep told Radio Tamazuj that Rol has been appointed to replace former MP Deng Wol Tong when Deng was convicted by an Aweil court of insulting another politician’s wife.
Deng has since been found innocent by the National Supreme Court, and has since been sworn in his previous post as a state MP, Achack said.
However, the newly ousted MP Rol said his removal is political. He said that he was elected by people in his constituency to represent them in the assembly. He added that the move was not approved by the SPLM party.
Kuel was ousted from his position earlier this year following a power struggle with political rival Paul Malong, the SPLA chief of staff.
