Muslim leaders in Yei River County of Central Equatoria State have urged communities to embrace the culture of peace and reconciliation.

Speaking during Eid al-Adha celebrations held in Yei town on Friday, Hassan Ambu, the deputy chairperson of the Islamic Council said it is important to promote peace and reconciliation in the country since it was the day Abraham planned to sacrifice Isaac, his only son, to God.

“Today [Friday] is an important day because Abraham planned to sacrifice his son Isaac to God. We need to promote love, peace and reconciliation. This is my message to the people,” he said.

Abdallah Adam, a Muslim 'sheikh' at Yei’s main mosque, urged the public to preach peace, love and forgiveness in South Sudan.

“We need to be in peace and reconcile with anyone who has wronged you or someone you have disagreed with. My message to the leaders of this country is that there is a need for peace and stability to end peoples’ suffering,” he said.

South Sudan Muslim believers celebrated on Friday the feast of Eid al-Adha across the country.

Eid al-Adha is an Islamic festival to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim (also known as Abraham) to follow God's command to sacrifice his son. Muslims around the world observe this event.
