Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has been asked to appoint a special envoy to monitor peace in South Sudan.

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has been asked to appoint a special envoy to monitor peace in South Sudan.

This came during a meeting between six leaders of the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) and President Museveni in Uganda on Tuesday.

Joseph Bangasi Bakasoro, a member of the alliance and head of the South Sudan National Movement for Change (SSNMC), told Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday that they had fruitful meetings with Museveni.

“We met President Museveni as SSOA leaders to brief him on the implementation of the peace agreement. Also, we asked him to support the implementation of the agreement,” he said.

The opposition politician revealed that they asked President Museveni to appoint a special envoy for peace in South Sudan, saying the current stage of the peace process makes it an appropriate time for President Museveni to name a special envoy.

“We want President Museveni to be very close to us to monitor the implementation of the peace agreement. We appealed to him to be with South Sudan in order to push forward the peace deal,” he said.

“President Museveni promised to support South Sudan. He also promised to support the peace agreement so that it doesn’t collapse again,” he added.

The deal, brokered by Sudan’s former president Omar al-Bashir and Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, has been delayed by disputes. The number of states and security arrangements remain the biggest challenges in the September 2018 peace accord.

President Salva Kiir and opposition leader Riek Machar said on Tuesday that they made significant progress in talks aimed at ironing out issues related to security arrangements. The two leaders agreed in Juba to ensure the transitional government is established by 12 November.
