Murder convict sentenced to death in Jonglei

A court in South Sudan’s Bor town of Jonglei State on Friday sentenced a murder convict to death.

Nathaniel Geu Nyuon was sentenced along with two other suspects Akech Mayom Akech and Andrew Chol Geu. The three were arrested last year in connection to the death of Gai Nyuon identified as their relative.

According to the prosecution, the deceased was killed after he demanded the three pay his 300,000 SSPs which they owed him.

Jonglei State High Court controller Philip Nyainy Gai read out the ruling to reporters after the court verdict was passed.

“According to the case for settlement by the judge Molana John Yel Aleu, his decree passed as follows for the two convicts: Third accused who is Nathaniel Gai Nyuon is sentenced to death. He is sentenced to death until he dies in the prison. This is under section 206 of penal court of South Sudan. The other convict Akech Mayom Akech is imprisoned for two years and two months. This is under section 359 of the penal code. And he will also be fined 20, 000 SSPs or serve six more months,” he read.

The court official declined to comment whether the suspects will be allowed to appeal. No court verdict was read for Andrew Chol Geu.
