Officials in Mundri West County of Western Equatoria State on Tuesday arrested traders selling expired drugs and illicit alcohol and confiscated the goods.
Last month, the state government banned the importation and consumption of alcoholic drinks deemed harmful to the health of people like the Royal Gin, Star Gin, and others.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Mundri County Commissioner Zilipher Dawa said the traders were arrested, and expired drugs and illicit alcohol were confiscated during an inspection exercise per the ban order.
“The inspectors have brought here the drugs that expired since 2018, others 2019, 2020, 2021,” Dawa said. “On top of that the governor banned unwanted alcohol like the Star Gin, now we have also confiscated then because it is harmful to people’s health.”
She urged the people of Mundri West to be cautious while buying any goods, by checking the expiry date, saying expired goods are dangerous for human consumption.
Commissioner Dawa further urged the authorities to ensure those arrested face justice.
