Mundri Community calls for independent investigation

The Greater Mundri Community in Juba has called on both the national and state governments to establish an independent fact-finding committee including community representatives to investigate the causes of the incidents last week in which several people were killed.

Speaking on Thursday at a news conference at South Sudan Hotel in Buluk, Stephen Ali Komoyayi, Secretary General of the Greater Mundri Community condemned the killing of innocent people and looting of property property.

“We urge the national and the state governments to restore normalcy in the area under the County Commissioner to instill confidence in the people, constitute an independent fact-finding committee, including community representatives, to establish the root causes of the incident,” Stephen said.

Stephen said that the people of Greater Mundri are peace-loving and have always stood for the production and realization of the best interests of the South Sudanese and shall continue to do so. He refuted claims that the county is hosting a new rebellion.

“Information has been widely circulated in the media that there is rebellion in Greater Mundri against the government,” Stephen said, adding, “To the best of our knowledge, this is not the case.”

Parliament summons security ministers over Mundri events

Meanwhile, the national legislative assembly has raised a motion summoning the ministers of defense, national security and interior as well as the governor of Western Equatoria State to appear before the parliament next week, 1 June, over the insecurity in Mundri County.

“Is there a rebellion or not? In case there is a rebellion, how can we contain it? Who are those responsible?” MP from Magwi County Julius Mulinga questioned.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj today, Leader of Minority in the Parliament Onyoti Adigo said that the governmentis “inviting more rebellion in the country” by failing to provide services to the people.

“There is rebellion in Western Equatoria, there is rebellion in Eastern Equatoria, Upper Nile, in Jonglei and Bentiu, and there is tribal fighting in Warrap where tens of people got killed. There are killings in Lake State, everywhere there are still fighting. What is the remedy to all these problems which are there?”

“Is the government ready to fight when there are economic problems? Because at the present moment we are facing economic problems. Can you really be able to maintain these two issues economic with the fighting or war in the country? I doubt, because this war needs money,” Adigo said.

“The only solution to these problems for the government to come out is to accept the reality that there are problems and these problems need to be addressed through dialogue. People need to dialogue so that people can bring peace to this country – not the government alone,” he added.
