A lawmaker representing Mukaya County in Yei’s legislative assembly said his people who are currently displaced are hungry, pointing out that mangoes are the only meal for them.

MP Robert Isaiah Lomude told Radio Tamazuj more than 6,000 internally displaced persons mostly women and children from Lorena village and surrounding areas are hungry and that many are fleeing from the area of Mukaya due to hunger.

“Their living conditions are not good at all. They lack food and they are currently depending on mangoes for their breakfast, lunch and dinner,” he said.

Lomude further said the hungry conflict-displaced families are currently living in Gaare, Gezira and Kanjoro areas under harsh living conditions.

He claimed that the two rival forces clashed in the area on 9 May, displacing civilians. He pointed out that many families are currently living in the bush while others fled to Yei town.

Lomude appealed to the warring parties to cease hostilities, protect civilians and embrace peace to end the suffering of the vulnerable population in Mukaya County.
