An acute shortage of medical supplies and trained health workers in Mukaya County of Yei River State has exacerbated the spread of disease, a local official said.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, the county commissioner, Joy Keji said most people have been forced to move long distances to access medical services in Yei town.

“Mukaya County has only one primary healthcare center in Roronyo Boma and people there don’t have access to medical drugs. People from there move long distances to Limbe and sometimes to Yei town to seek medical attention,” Keji explained.

She urged the health ministry and humanitarian organizations to intervene and help the locals.

“My message to the ministry of health is that they need to supply drugs there and also conduct health awareness more especially on Ebola. We have made renovations in some of the health facilities,” the commissioner said.

She added, “We now need medicines and health workers from the ministry of health and the humanitarian partners”.

Mukaya County is one of the areas badly affected by the 2016 crisis.
