The Yei-Kaya road in South Sudan’s Yei River state, which was closed for weeks after several insecurity incidences on the highway, has been reopened, a local official said Thursday.
The Mugwo County Commissioner, Emmanuel Taban Seme told Radio Tamazuj that passenger cars were now plying the 45 miles road linking Yei town to Kaya border post without any interferences.
“The road is open and passenger vehicles have started moving on the road,” he added.
The official, however, said several people, despite the relative calm in the area, are still in bushes following recent attacks that occurred on the road.
He said his office was ready for peaceful dialogue with the armed opposition groups to create a conducive environment for the safe return of civilians so that they resettle and restart their livelihoods.
“We cannot resolve problems as citizens of one country through violence. Let us use non-violent approaches to resolve our differences in an amicable manner,” stressed Taban.
One of the areas badly affected by South Sudan’s civil war, Yei River State has witnessed gruesome human rights violations and massive displacements since 2016.
