The telecommunications company, MTN, over the weekend restored services in Aweil Center County, Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, after more than a month, county authorities confirmed.
Citizens in the county have been protesting since the MTN went off-air on 8 July due to technical problems and were calling for immediate restoration of the telecommunication services so that they could communicate.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj last Saturday, the Aweil Center County Commissioner, Peter Natali Bak, confirmed that the network services resumed in the area on Friday last week.
“The network resumed yesterday (Friday) and thank you Radio Tamazuj for updating the public on issues affecting citizens in Aweil Center County. We are also extending appreciation to MTN for restoring the service,” Commissioner Bak said.
The regional manager of MTN in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, Kur Amos, confirmed that the company's services were restored after four spare parts were imported from outside the country.
Kur said, “About four spare parts were brought and it never worked out until the engineers took all the spare parts apart and managed to fix the problem, and now the network is functioning.”
Martin Mading Akuei, a resident of Aweil Center County, said they were relieved after the restoration of the telecommunications services.
“Yes, that is true. The network has resumed and we the People of Aweil Center are so happy for the initiative,’’ Akuei said. “The situation was so bad because all money transfer companies that depended on phone calls were shut down, even marketing activities were canceled.”
