Cellphone network MTN is back in service after more than six months of being shutdown in Yei.
It is not known why MTN first went off air, but subscribers were surprised to see calls coming from the MTN network this weekend.
“The forgotten network is back on air and we hope it will not disappear like what happened before” said Moses, an MTN user in Yei town.
Recently, Yei has seen fighting between government and opposition forces, and cell phone networks have not been fully working. But MTN users in Yei still face another challenge: there is a shortage of airtime in town, and citizens are buying at inflated prices.
“Currently they are using a new system call “e-top-Up” in which if you need for 10 SSP, sellers sell it at different prices. Some sell at 15 -20 SSP per 10 SSP scratch card. This is a very bad to image to the MTN Company,” Moses said.
