The Telco, MTN on Monday started operations in Langkien, the headquarters of Nyirol County, Jonglei State for the first time since South Sudan’s independence in 2011.
Several residents who spoke to Radio Tamazuj shortly after the installation of the telecommunication services said they were happy to be connected to the rest of the world.
One county resident, Awadhia John, said, “As women, we are happy. We feel that peace has reached us because for the first time we are having a means of communication.”
John Deng, an elderly Nyirol resident, could not hide his happiness, saying he would be connected to relatives for the first time since the war erupted in 2013.
“Due to the 2013 war, we have been disconnected as families. But now we are happy that we will hear from our loved ones after many years,” Deng said.
The residents appreciated MTN for their service and called for the extension of coverage to the rest of the areas in the county.
For his part, James Bol Makuei, the Nyirol County commissioner appreciated the mobile operator for extending its telecommunication services to the county, saying they are now able to communicate with the rest of the world.
“We are happy with the mobile operator for the services. The coverage goes up to areas 7 hours (on foot) from the county headquarters like Motot, Walgak, and Cwil Payams,” he said.
