The international medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has said it has trained two community health volunteers on malaria treatment in Mewun Payam after reports of increasing malaria cases, while denying opening a new clinic in the area.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Thursday, Allan Murphy, MSF’s Field Coordinator in Boma State said the two volunteers from Mewun Payam were taken to Pribor town for a week-long training on malaria treatment.

“They were also supplied with rapid tests to test for malaria and medicines to treat malaria in Mewun, “said Murphy.

He pointed out that the organization decided to help the people of Mewun Payam after receiving reports that between 5 to 10 children were dying per week.

Last week, Mawun officials announced that least 39 people died from malaria due to acute shortages of malaria drugs since the beginning of March.

Mewun Payam, which is located about 37 kilometres way from Jebel Boma area, has no roads leading to its neighbouring areas.
