Medical relief agency Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has said the violence in South Sudan’s Upper Nile State is worsening the cholera outbreak.
MSF recounted in a press release on Friday that the epidemic has been spreading in South Sudan since its declaration in October 2024.
The press release said thousands of people were being displaced, losing access to healthcare, safe water, and sanitation—key factors driving the rapid spread of cholera.
“This escalation of violence is pushing hundreds across the border to Ethiopia in search of urgent medical care, where a cholera is also rapidly spreading across western part of the country, endangering thousands of lives,” reads the press release.
It says MSF teams were responding on both sides of the border, treating not only cholera patients but wounded people as well.
