MSF hands over Juba cholera centre to health ministry as outbreak ends

The international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) announced Saturday that it has handed over medical activities in the Cholera Treatment Centre of Juba Teaching Hospital to the National Ministry of Health (MoH).

Following a confirmed outbreak of cholera in late July, MSF in collaboration with the National Ministry of Health responded by vaccinating people at high risk, providing clean drinking water, supporting medical care and giving training in medical response and infection control at Juba Teaching Hospital.

MSF says that its teams will continue to support the cholera centre at Juba Teaching Hospital by providing water and sanitation activities, but the actual treatment of patients is handed over to the hospital.

“Should there be a rise in confirmed cholera cases; MSF is ready to increase support again,” the organization said. But the group’s emergency coordinator, Anja Wolz, also said that the outbreak has been brought to a “quick end” through the efforts of the different healthcare providers.

“After good collaboration with the National Ministry of Health (MoH) and given the sharp decrease in patients, we have now handed over the medical activities of this facility to the MoH. However, MSF remains fully prepared to come back and provide additional support should the numbers of confirmed cases dramatically increase again,” said Wolz.
