The medical aid organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has condemned the shooting of civilians at a UN base in Malakal saying that it is providig medical care for the wounded survivors.

After a shooting late on Wednesday the aid group received 9 wounded patients at its hospital in the Malakal protection-of-civilians site, including women and the elderly. Among the patients received by MSF, one patient was badly wounded and died shortly after being brought to the MSF facility.

“MSF condemns in the strongest terms possible the shooting at the PoC site and calls on all parties to the conflict to respect civilians, medical staff and patients,” reads a statement today from the aid group.

Five patients continue to recive treatment in Malakal and three have been referred for further treatment after stabilization. All of those being treated by MSF are internally displaced people, among the more than 30,000 seeking shelter in the Malakal UN compound.

MSF says that this incident “adds to an already deteriorating humanitarian situation in the state over the last few weeks, which has left the civilian population constantly exposed to episodes of violence, increased numbers of wounded, further displacements, heightening rates of malnutrition and the risk of outbreaks.”
