A Wednesday morning inferno destroyed part of the Juba office of Michael Chiangjiek Gaey, the National Minister for Land, Housing, and Urban Development.
Potur Magok Jok, the Executive Secretary in the minister’s office, told Radio Tamazuj the fire broke out at around 9:30 a.m. after he switched on the air conditioners upon arriving at work.
“When the electricity came on, I turned on all the air conditioners (AC). Immediately, one of the AC units caught fire, so I went to the minister and informed him that my office was on fire,” Magok said.
“The fire damaged the AC, some chairs, tables, and the television. The ceiling board also collapsed, but the minister’s office was unharmed. However, the water used to extinguish the flames ruined some items,” Magok explained.
He added that the firefighters arrived late and deployed their extinguishers, but they were insufficient.
Magok went on to say that the firefighters disconnected the electricity supply at the suspected point of origin to control the situation.
