Nearly 44,000 internally displaced persons in Tonj East and Tonj South counties of Warrap State are in dire need of humanitarian assistance, a local official said.
The IDPs were forced out of their homes as a result of intercommunal violence in the two counties in the past four months.
Moses Athian, the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) coordinator for Tonj South County, told Radio Tamazuj last Thursday that no assistance has been provided to the conflict-displaced families ever since they left their homes.
He further said Tonj East County also faced massive displacement, with several houses burnt down and numerous properties looted.
“As RRC, we request for an assessment of the population forced to evacuate their houses due to conflicts that happened,” said Athian.
The RRC official appealed to humanitarian agencies operating in Warrap to conduct a needs-assessments mission before the rains intensify, citing areas in Tonj East County which are inaccessible during rainy seasons.
He, however, said the security situation in the two counties was calm.
