About 10 primary and secondary schools in Raja Town of South Sudan’s Lol State remain because teachers and pupils fled after clashes between government and opposition forces in April in Raja town, a local official said.

The mayor of Raja town Al-Amin Janga told Radio Tamazuj that many families fled the area to neighbouring Sudan, leaving the town and schools deserted.

Janga said only four schools have resumed classes since calm returned to the town, adding that more than 4,000 pupils and students are now attending classes.

The mayor further noted that the schools that are operational lack school furniture including chairs which were looted during the fighting.
