A monitoring group in Sudan has warned there may be increased food insecurity related to the conflict and climatic conditions in South Kordofan and Blue Nile states.
The South Kordofan Blue Nile Coordination Unit said up to 10,000 people in Blue Nile state face a failed harvest and will require food assistance through February 2016. The group said in South Kordofan there is a slightly better food situation but dry weather has led to a poor planting season, with 15,000 people in Dalami counties in need of aid.
The group said renewed fighting could worsen the situation, noting that both sides appear to be preparing for another season of warfare. The Coordination Unit in particular cited a build up of government forces in Habila, Dalami, Talodi, and El Liri towns.
“After more than four years of conflict, people’s ability to cope is exhausted,” the Coordination Unit said. “They cannot endure another year of violence, aerial bombardment, food scarcity, poor health and lack of education, without further significant displacement, contributing to the global refugee crisis, and loss of life.”
