China denies promising South Sudan $8 billion for aid (Reuters, March 14) – An interview with an envoy of the Asian power suggests that the figure was invented or fabricated following Salva Kiir’s visit to Beijing last April.

Sudanese pound strengthens after deal to resume oil (Sudan Tribune, March 12)  Immediately after Juba and Khartoum signed a deal to resume oil production the dollar sold 6.9 pounds in the Sudanese black markets, compared to more than 7 pounds previously. 

South Sudan and Sudan agree to jointly tackle foreign debt (Radio Tamazuj, 14 March) – Debt relief and sharing the debt burden are important parts of the Cooperation Agreement.

United Nations seeks $1 billion for humanitarian projects in Sudan (Sudan Tribune, March 13)  The United Nations wants to come up with $983 million in order to assist 3,4 million people including South Sudanese who are stranded in the North. 

West Darfur bakers strike against high flour prices (Radio Dabanga, March 15)  Bakery owners also claimed to be protesting against the imposition of taxes and the poor security situation. The strike is expected to last a week.
