Festus Mogae, chairman of the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC) said the political, security, humanitarian and economic situation remain precarious and not conducive for peace implementation in the country.
JMEC is a body tasked with overseeing implementation of the signed peace deal in South Sudan.
Speaking during a plenary meeting in Juba on Wednesday, Mogae said: “The renewed conflict since July 2016 and the escalation of armed violence, the fight of key opposition figures, and the emergence of new armed and political opposition has undermined the credibility of the implementation of the peace agreement .”
He further said continued conflict exacerbates a worsening economic and humanitarian situation and is an impediment to inclusive political, social, and economic progress in the country.
The peace monitor pointed out that gross violations of human rights and international humanitarian law continue unabated in South Sudan.
“The continued lack of accountability and prevailing impunity undermines efforts towards reconciliation, healing and recovery,” Mogae said.
He urged all parties to the peace agreement and estranged groups to continue embrace and genuinely in revitalization of the 2015 peace agreement.
