The Mobile Court currently hearing cases in Unity State’s Leer County on Monday convicted three men, one found guilty of murder and two of rape, and sentenced them to serve jail terms, and pay fines and compensation to the families of their victims.
The Mobile Court which is supported by the UN Mission in South Sudan and started work on the backlog of cases in Leer County on 15 April at the request of Unity State Governor Justice Gen. Riek Biem Top.
Madeng Latjor Madeng, the Unity State Public Prosecutor and Acting Director of Legal Administration, told Radio Tamazuj that the sentences were proportionate to the crimes committed.
“Each of the convicts has their sentences according to the Mobile Court. The guy who rapes a 15-year-old girl was sentenced to 7 years in prison, was fined SSP 600,000 and 2 cows to pay to the family of the victim,” he explained. “The other man who was also convicted of rape was sentenced to 3 years in jail and fined SSP 2 million. Finally, the man found guilty of murder will serve 6 years in jail and pay 80 cows as blood compensation.”
He said the rape victims were treated in hospital and recovered.
Latjor, however, said that when there was a functional court in Leer Town, there was no backlog of cases and that there was less criminality and cases of forced and early marriages and murder were few.
